Best Buy 01/10/2010

Intel's new Wireless Display technology, known around here as “WiDi,” took home the coveted CNET People’s Voice Award* at CES 2010. Awesome! So, what is it exactly? In essence, it’s wireless HDMI that allows forthcoming 2010 laptops enabled with the new CPU from Intel to transmit a signal to a receiving device that is connected to their television. Translation: Now you can wirelessly stream video and pictures from your laptop to your flat panel. So, gone are the days of hooking up your laptop to view content you want to see on TV, and along with those days, the oft frustrating situation of having to find a place to rest your laptop near the TV while also standing awkwardly to advance through images or pull up content. And trust us: this thing is much better than a 30-foot HDMI cable. Intel’s win is especially exciting for us, because this beauty is a Best Buy exclusive. (We didn’t stuff the ballot box, we promise).

In addition to a laptop equipped with a Wireless Display capable CPU—of which Best Buy will have models available from Dell, Sony and Toshiba starting January 17—a Wireless Display adapter, such as the Push2TV announced by Netgear, is also needed. Look for adapter-included bundle options with select systems at, you guessed it, Best Buy.

*EDITOR’S NOTE: The people who vote in CNET’s People’s Voice Award are an entirely different people than the people involved in The People’s Choice Awards. Therefore, the people from New Moon won nothing, people.
